To start it is good to understand some of the lingo and basics of oils. Therapeutic oils are for health, where aromatic oils are for smell. Therapeutic grade oils are the best you can get. Yes, they are expensive, but they work. If you compare the price of the essential oil to pharmacy drugs, it may not be that expensive, not to mention you do not have all the side effects that drugs have. Finding a company that you trust can be scary. I would not want to pay money for something that is not quality. I suggest find a friend who uses oils and see what brand they use. I have found Young Living to be the best brand. I have also bought from Beeyoutiful. Both can be found on the web.
A single oil is just that, one oil, example: lemon or oregano. A blend is more than one oil put together, example: thieves or RC (respiratory care). A single oil can be mixed with other oils, but do not mix the blends.
There are different ways to use the oils. You can put it on right out of the bottle. This is called neat. If you put on the oil neat, but find you are sensitive to this oil, then add a plain oil to dilute it. Another way to apply an oil is to mix it with a carrier oil. Many oils sell their own carrier oils or you can use olive oil or any other oil you like. You can also ingest some of the oils by adding it to milk or water or put it in a capsule. You can add an oil to bath water. You can also breathe it in by putting it in your hands or on a cloth or smelling it right out of the bottle. Finally, you can diffuse the oil into the air, by purchasing a diffuser for essential oils.
Please remember I am learning and I am just a beginner.

Thieves
Another essential oil I like is thieves. It is also a blend. It is named from the thieves that used this particular blend of natural plants to prevent them from getting the plague as they robbed their victims. It is used to kill germs. The company I get most of my oils from, Young Living, has a thieves line. They have cleaners, toothpaste, handsoap, spray, mouthwash, and more. I have used it on pimples and it reduces them more quickly. It smell nice too.

Respiratory Care Testimony
The next big seller for me was with Respiratory Care. This is an essential oil blend. My 3 1/2 year old daughter had a cough for a few weeks. This cough was waking her up a few times every night. The doctor put her on a nebulizer with albulterol. She broke out in hives. So, I called my friend and she gave me some RC (Respiratory Care) I diffused it all night for about a week and the cough went away.
How I was introduced to essential oils.
I started attending a new church and the members were big on essential oils. When both my daughters had nasal congestion, I thought let's give this a try. My younger daughter was under one and the older one was only 3. I picked up Eucalyptus radiata and tried it. Very quickly my older daughter could breathe. It was wonderful. She also recovered faster than usual. I did not see the difference in the little one, but decided to buy some and the next time the baby got a cold and couldn't nurse I tried it again and immediately she could breathe and eat. It is 100% therapeutic grade not aromatic grade.
